For more details, see my post about this trip.
Day 1
- Roswell, NM – International UFO Museum & Research Center
- Lincoln County, NM – Billy the Kid sites. A little hard to find but worth it! This town is kept fully preserved.
- White Sands National Park
- Dripping Springs Natural Area – a good break in the drive to stretch the legs & enjoy some scenery
- Hotel: Las Cruces, New Mexico
Day 2
- Tombstone, Arizona – I loved Tombstone (the movie & the town). I learned that there is only one building still from the days of the Earps but enjoyed the city all the same. It is a bit more commercial than Lincoln County. So expect more people here. We did tour the silver mine (which I do recommend), of course the Birdcage theater (that’s the only remaining building), and watched the reenactment. Then enjoyed time just wandering around the town.
- Saguro National Park
- Hotel – Phoenix
Day 3
- Sedona, Arizona – Red Rock Mountains
- Coconino National Forest
- Hotel – Flagstaff, Arizona
Day 4
- Meteor Crater
- Winslow, Arizona – stood on the corner & enjoyed an old soda shop
- Petrified Forest (& Painted Desert) National Park
- Lowell Observatory
- Hotel – Flagstaff, Arizona
Day 5
- Grand Canyon
- Hotel – Lake Powell (Page, Arizona)
Day 6
- Horseshoe Bend
- Antelope Canyon – book tickets EARLY. There’s plenty of guides, but this site should help start the search.
- Monument Valley, Utah – Beautiful drive, but stop & recreate the Forest Gump scene.
- Four Corners Monument
- Mesa Verde (Cortez, Colorado)
- Hotel – Durango, Colorado
Day 7
- Aztec Ruins
- Sante Fe – we spent time wandering the town, but the Loretto Chapel was a must see for me (did you grow up watching Unsolved Mysteries too?)
- Rio Grande Royal Gorge – and a quick walk on the Gorge Bridge
- Hotel – Taos
