• See my itinerary for the summary.

Roswell, Billy the Kid, White Sands

    • Roswell, NM – Alien encounter? The UFO Museum & Research Center will make you wonder.
    • Lincoln County, NM – This is a bit off the main roads in the mountains. Pretty drive & cuter town. Most of the historical buildings remain. I remember it costing something like $10 for access to all historical sites in the town. We grabbed a yummy lunch at one of the local spots. We spent a good few hours here & loved it.
    • White Sands, NM – a little thunderstorm moved through while we were here. So our time was cut short. But this place was crazy!
    • Dripping Springs Natural Area – Sadly, while we were there the springs were dry. But we still enjoyed our walk around the area. Even saw the slot cave where they once found a hermit. Overall, a much needed break in our drive to Las Cruces where we stayed for the night.

    Tombstone & Saguro National Park

    • Tombstone – Super excited to see Tombstone. I found out the only remaining original building is the Bird Cage Theater. Most building date back to 1882. Still old, just not from the Earp days.
And prepare yourself, I also learned the shootout didn’t actually happen at the OK Corral.
This destination is pretty popular. Expect the crowds to grow during the day.
Also, the city is a bit more commercial than Lincoln County. So be prepared for a different experience.
      • Good enough to Mine – The silver mine that started it all. Take a tour & learn all about this life. This mine is the reason the Tombstone population grew to 20,000 its prime.
      • Bird cage Theater – This is “the” building to see. When the town was abandoned, this became the storage unit & was boarded up for 40 years. When they went back in, there was a treasure trove of history & you can still see it all today. Including, Doc Holliday’s original Faro table.
      • The O.K. Corral – We watched the reenactment and enjoyed learning the true history of these famous 30 seconds in history.
    • Saguro National Park – Not our favorite of the National Parks, but glad we saw it. It was a unique pretty. All the cacti and what you imagine southwest landscape to look like.
    • Driving to Phoenix – I only call this out because this was an unplanned adventure for us. As we were leaving Saguro, there was some flash flooding. Had to find another way out. Once we finally got back on the main highway there was crazy weather & insane traffic. We found out later a weather phenomenon called a Haboob had blown through. Our unplanned adventures tend to be some of our most fond memories.

    Sedona

This was an intentional easy day for us. We did an easy hike through Red Rock State Park & drove through Coconino National Forest.

Meteor Crater, Winslow, Petrified Forest (& Painted Desert), Lowell Observatory

    • Meteor Crater – The size is unreal. They have a full-size cutout of a person at the bottom to give perspective.
    • Winslow, Arizona – they have a flatbed Ford & Eagles music playing. Very nostalgic downtown. We found a cute soda shop & had some yummy Italian Soda.
    • Petrified Forest (& Painted Desert) National Park – This place is MASSIVE. Stop by for a map & enjoy the drive at your own pace.
    • Lowell Observatory – Very educational & fun. This is where an astronomer discovered Pluto. The telescope is from the turn of the 20th century and still used today.

    Grand Canyon

The reason for this trip. The Grand Canyon! Wowser! It’s everything you imagine. We only did the South Rim. We got the map & picked stops that looked interesting to us. The closer we got to the Canyon Village the more people we encountered, but that’s to be expected here.

We almost did the donkey rides & that still may be a future trip check-list item. But for this trip we enjoyed the scenery & taking in the park.

After moving away from the canyon views we drove through the park. This is where you should keep an eye out for wildlife.

Pro tip: If you see a bunch of cars pulled over, keep your eyes peeled! This is a good sign that there is wildlife nearby.

Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, Four Corners, Mesa Verde

    • Horseshoe Bend – Just incredible beauty. The colors are unreal.
    • Antelope Canyon – Book tickets EARLY. Sadly, I learned this lesson the hard way. So don’t make my same mistake. We didn’t get to take a tour, but I still hope to get back for this one day, because oh my this looks gorgeous. I’ve included the link I would use to start making plans for this.
    • Monument Valley, Utah – So this was more of a last minute decision for us. We had completed our “must do” list & decided to go visit family in Colorado. But glad we drove through here. If you want to reenact the Forest Gump scene, stop at Mile Marker 13 on Route 163. I remember there being signs at the time. There’s still so much in Utah we want to see in future trips, but this is what we did as we clipped this state on this trip.
    • Lunch at Twin Rocks Cafe – a roadside diner with great scenery.
    • Four Corners Monument – Be ready to stand in a line. It moves quick, but you will be standing in the sun. People were polite & we all took turns taking pictures for the groups in front of us.
    • Mesa Verde National Park (Cortez, Colorado) – This was a pleasant surprise that we are glad we did. Incredible view into the live of our early ancestors.

Aztec Ruins, Santa Fe, Rio Grand Royal Gorge

    • Aztec Ruins National Monument – it is mostly ruins, but you get to really explore.
    • Santa Fe – I’m surprised I can’t find more pictures. We really like Santa Fe. But I’m not surprised the one photo I can still find is of the Spiral Staircase in the Loretto Chapel. I remembered this episode from Unsolved Mysteries and had to see it. I wasn’t expecting the chapel to be as beautiful as it was.
    • Rio Grande Royal Gorge – wow! This bridge is amazing. After we drove over, we parked to walk out on it. I did look down, but quickly walked right back to the car.
  • Surprisingly, this is a difficult one. Since we live here we don’t always take “trips”. But we’ve found some fun things I’ll share.

    • Hochatown / Broken Bow – Every time we go, there’s something new. Our first trip was a secluded small cabin for just us two. The area has become very popular and there is so much to do.
    • Talimena Drive – From Talihina, OK, to Mena, AR. A popular drive in the fall to see the changing colors.
    • Robber’s Cave – We spent a cool autumn day at this park & enjoyed taking in the scenery.
    • 45th Infantry Museum – particularly special to us since my husband is a veteran of this group. The 45th has an incredible history.
    • State Capitol – It was important for me to take my daughter to our state Capitol.
    • Eischens – I believe the oldest bar in Oklahoma. But the chicken and okra is worth the trip.
    • Meers Restaurant – I don’t remember how old this restaurant is, and can’t believe I can’t find my pictures, but the burgers here are fantastic.
    • Medicine Park – close by Meers, and the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Making a great day trip. This small town has beautiful walking areas & cute shops.
    • Route 66 – We’ve done a few different days driving parts of historic Route 66. While Pop’s isn’t one of the historic stops, it was super fun.
  • These trips are difficult to remember specific details. We’ve been multiple times because I had a sister that lived in Seattle for a while. And these trips started back in 2012. I wasn’t great at documenting my trips yet. Plus, I didn’t have to do much planning since my sister knew where to take us. But here are some highlights I do remember.

    • Ferry Ride – Take some time to enjoy the area around Seattle.
    • The Public Market – this will of course be on any list, but it is a great place to visit
    • Multnomah Falls – Breathtaking. A fun hike to the top of the 2nd falls. We did the full hike around, but that would be for serious hikers. I personally wasn’t ready.
    • Powell’s City of Books – It is appropriately named. Powell’s City of Books

  • Texas is a state we visit often. It is only 20 minutes from our house after all. There’s obviously a lot to do (Rangers, Cowboys, 6 Flags, Sea World) but here are specific highlights from some of our trips.

    Dallas area

    • Dealey Plaza & 6th floor museum – Be your own judge.
      https://www.jfk.org/
    • George W Bush Presidential Center – Stopped by here on a whim and glad we did.
      https://www.bushcenter.org/
    • Pocket Sandwich Theater – Do you enjoy laughs? How about getting into popcorn throwing fights with total strangers? This place is awesome. https://www.pocketsandwich.com/
    • La Parisienne French Bistro – Found this gem on a girls’ day of shopping. Just adorable.
      https://www.parisienneusa.com/
    • Mount Carmel (aka Branch Davidian Compound) – So this is about 90 minutes outside of Dallas, but closer than San Antonio.

    San Antonio Area

    • Floating the river – There’s the Guadalupe or Comal rivers. Plenty of tube rental companies in the area.
    • Gruene, Texas – Sounds like “Green”. Gruene Hall has a great history. The Gristmill Restaurant over looks the river. Overall, a very old town that was preserved frozen in time.
    • See dinosaur Tracks – https://friendsofgovernmentcanyon.org/visit/dinosaur-tracks
    • San Marcos – Stayed here one year with a group for a float trip. Found all kinds of fun things in the area.
    • The Alamo – of course!

Fun things when enjoy often that may not be in the list of “well known”

    • Allen Americas – minor league hockey
    • Frisco Roughriders – minor league baseball
    • Majestic Theater – high quality productions

  • Interested in just the itinerary? Check out my itineraries page. Since this was our first “real” road trip, it’s a much shorter itinerary then our later trips.

    Eureka Springs, AR

We’ve been back to Arkansas multiple times. See my other blog about Arkansas for other fun cities. But for this trip, here’s what we found in Eureka Springs.

    • Turpentine Wildlife Refuge – A big cat rescue. A great place for those who love tigers.
      https://www.turpentinecreek.org/
    • Adorable Downtown – The downtown area remains one of our favorites. We love quaint towns.
    • Haunted spots – If you’re interested in the paranormal, there are lots of places with spooky stories.
    • Prohibition history – There is a fun underground history of Eureka Springs in the Prohibition era.
    • Lunch train ride – Beautiful, peaceful, historical & yummy. A great time for all Ages.
      https://www.esnarailway.com/Lunch-Train.html
    • Magnetic springs – a soothing place to sit & recharge those feet
    • Passion play & holy land tour – A massive production & interesting view into the Holy Lands.

    Cosmic Cavern

Cosmic Caverns was a adventurous stop between Eureka Springs & Branson.
    https://www.cosmiccavern.com/

    Branson, MO

    • Butterfly Garden – A particularly fun time for kids.
      https://thebutterflypalace.com/
    • Adventure Zipline – just take the plunge. It’s an exciting time.
      https://www.adventureziplinesofbranson.com/
    • Putt Putt – pick any. This activity became a tradition for our trips.
    • SHOWS – So many to choose from. We did these two:
      • Sight & Sound Theater – it changes what the show is every so often, but it’s an experience that incorporates what feels like a 360 experience
      • Acrobats of China – not a popular show when we went. So we got GREAT seats, and it was very entertaining.
    • Titanic Museum – this was a must-do for us because my daughter was (& still is) obsessed with the story of the Titanic.
    • Ride a Duck – you get a tour of the town, some history, then a ride on the lake.

    Wichita, KS

Wichita, Kansas, took an unexpected turn for us. We had some car trouble coming out of the Ozarks so we spent our time having an adventure trying to figure out a way home. But here are some of the items that were on our itenerary.

    • Downtown
    • Keeper of the Plains
    • Old Cowtown Museum
    • Botanica Gardens
    • Museums of World Treasures

    Other stops in these states

Arkansas – Sadly, I can’t find pictures from these trips, but these were some of our favorites

    • Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art – An incredible art gallery surrounded by beautiful scenery. https://crystalbridges.org/
    • Hot Springs – Love visiting Hot Springs.
      • The Arlington – a historic hotel
      • Hot Springs National Park
      • Bath Houses – The only 2 remaining are Buckstaff & Quapaw
      • Horse Track – it’s a fun way to spend some time
      • Rocky’s – A restaurant with great pizza & salads across the street from the horse track
      • Taking a drive or hike through the mountains
      • Downtown – Yes, we love downtown areas.

Missouri – We came through St. Louis on our return home from another trip. Found some great BBQ & rode to the top of the Arch.
